Do you remember riding on the carousel as a child? Do you recall feeling exhilaration as your horse rose high on the pole and the butterflies in your stomach as he descended to the lowest point? Around and around you rode, waiting for the glorious feeling of the rise, and the lull of the descent to the lowest position on the silver pole.
If you are in the grip of menopause, you are probably experiencing emotional ups and downs that seem to come out of nowhere. Mood swings and menopause go together like the rise and fall of the horses on the carousel. One minute you’re at the top of the pole, and the next minute you’ve descended into the depths of despair.
The mood swing of menopause can’t be turned off with the flick of a switch, but they can be managed. Here are some great ways to improve your moods as you navigate your way through the inevitability of menopause.
Yes, You Can Take a Nap
One of the best things you can do for yourself as you struggle with menopausal mood swings is rest. Take a short nap whenever you can. If your schedule won’t permit that luxury, try going to bed a little earlier, or sleeping a little longer in the morning. Do whatever you can to get plenty of rest.
Try to Eat a Healthy Diet
A healthy diet is a good idea for everyone, but it’s especially important during menopause. You know the drill. Healthy salads, plenty of fruit, leafy greens, whole grains and lean proteins will make you feel better and promote good health. Avoid caffeine most of the time, and stay away from junk food. An occasional indulgence is unavoidable. Sometimes you just need chocolate!
Take A Walk
Exercise is a natural mood enhancer. Take a walk during your lunch hour. Enroll in a yoga or water aerobics class. Get those endorphins pumping to release stress hormones. Exercise will elevate your mood, help you stay fit, and give you control over the dreaded menopausal weight gain.
Stay Connected
Nurture your friendships with the women in your life. Women can offer each other advice, support, and a shoulder to cry on when things get tough. A cup of coffee or a lunch date with a female friend can give you an outlet to vent, or provide an hour to talk, laugh and compare menopausal nightmare stories. The topic of conversation doesn’t matter, simply enjoy the company of a friend for a bright spot in your day.
