People experience dizziness or lightheadedness for many different reasons. Sinus congestion during cold and flu season often causes excess fluid build-up and disruptions of the middle ear. Older adults may develop vestibular canal dryness or calcium crystals in the middle ear that dislodge and also interfere with spatial balance signals. However, cardiac irregularities and other medical conditions might also play a role in the problem. While home remedies are available, make sure that the symptom is not caused by a more serious underlying condition.
Herbal Treatments
Using ginger root to combat nausea dates back thousands of years and remains popular in many world cultures. Nevertheless, the spice is also effective in relieving dizziness. Treatment involves chewing on a piece of root, eating ginger candy, taking ginger tablets or making a tea using the herb. The tea is made using two tablespoons of the root steeped in one pint of hot water. Ginger can be used safely in any form two or three times a day. Peppermint oil is an age old remedy for headaches, motion sickness and dizziness. The aromatic plant enhances blood circulation, which increases oxygen to the brain. Merely apply two to three drops of the essential oil to the forehead and back of the neck, relax and enjoy the fragrance.
The Epley Method
The Epley method was designed to recalibrate the middle ear sensory organs that commonly cause dizziness. Perform the exercise at bedtime by lying on your back for 30 seconds with a pillow positioned at shoulder height and the head relaxing backward. Turn your head to one side. Remain in this position for another 30 seconds. Turn your entire body in the direction of your head. But, keep the head turned so that you are now looking downward. Hold the position again for 30 seconds. Sit up abruptly and remain seated for a few minutes. Repeat the process on the other side. Perform the exercise three times on one or both sides as needed.
Stay Hydrated
When also suffering with a fever, diarrhea or vomiting, dizziness might be caused by a fluid imbalance. Drink fluids as tolerated. Consider sipping on diluted fruit juice, sports drinks, sweetened weak tea, broth or liquid gelatin.
Additional Tips
• Especially if having a bacterial or viral infection, get plenty of rest. Lie still in a dark room with eyes closed.
• Avoid using alcohol, caffeine or tobacco products as these substances affect circulation and may make symptoms worse.
• Avoid driving, operating machinery or climbing, which may cause an accident or fall.
