Most great leaders aren?t naturally born that way. Being a great leader is all about developing crucial skills and fostering an encouraging environment for subordinates. If leadership skills are lacking, they can be practiced and sharpened. By following a few simple guidelines, anyone can become a great leader.

Keep Your Word

Keeping one?s word is easily the most important trait of any trustworthy leader. Leaders need to be counted on. They have to come through when the time is right. A person who never keeps his or her word isn?t going to be trusted by coworkers or subordinates. People will love working for leaders who always keep their word. People will not want to go the extra mile for a leader that can?t be counted on. This simple but important step is a great way to distinguish one?s self as a great leader.

Set the Standard

Leaders always set the standards high. A great leader should only expect the best from subordinates, if he or she is working equally hard or harder. Setting the standard shows a leader?s dedication to the cause or project. It?s so important to set an outstanding example for employees to follow. This technique actually works in two ways. It sets a high standard for employees to follow, and it also demonstrates the hard work and dedication of the person in the leadership position. Nobody likes a lazy boss, but people love working for employers who show how dedicated they are to the position and their employees.

Know When to Follow

A great leader should also know when to follow. Leadership shouldn?t be confused with bossiness. A domineering boss can be unbearable to work for or with. A great leader always knows when to step aside. This is because good leaders can recognize leadership in others. This is also a great way to foster a workplace environment of responsibility. Employees should be encouraged to step up to positions of leadership. Only an insecure leader will find these acts threatening.

Be Proactive and Take Initiative

Ultimately, great leaders are proactive, and they take initiative on projects. Passive leaders are never admired. It?s critical to demonstrate the importance of being an active participant in the company?s affairs. Employees and subordinates will follow in a good leader?s footsteps, so it?s vital to set that standard high. Anyone can become a great leader by applying a few useful techniques to their current leadership skill set.
