BASAL METABOLISM

The minimum energy required at a molecular level to maintain the bodies vital functions whilst awake and at rest. The basal metabolic rate is typically measure in kilojoules spent per kilogram of body weight or per square metre of the body.

BASAL METABOLISM: "The basal metabolism, like any metabolistic rate, defines the minimum energy required for a homeostatic function to remain stable."
