ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY (AT)

1. the field of development concerned with the service provision of utilities that improve the functioning of individuals with disabilities. See also bioengineering. 2. specific equipment that assists individuals with disabilities to function more independently many areas, for example, mobility and personal care. Assistive devices (or assistive technology devices) range from simple devices such as canes and walkers, to hi-technology devices, for example, voice-controlled computers and computerized speech-output devices. This type of device is occasionally referred to as a daily-living aid or independent-living aid. See also independent living.
