SCRAMBLE COMPETITION

Mating rivalry occurring in animal behavior patterns which takes place when females are scattered or have become synchronized in breeding cycles, resulting in males having the inability to benefit in the hoarding of resources or protection of territory. Consequently, males may have to roam very far and be less selective in their breeding partners, while performing little, if any, courtship behavior. Males who succeed in mating with available females first attain the best reproductive success.
