Psychotherapy. Working through unconscious conflicts that are interferring with behaviour. Compare surface therapy.

DERMAL SENSITIVITY

The sensations that are detected by nerve cells in the skin.

DESCRIPTIVE OPERANT

Looks at the formal and physical requirements for reinforement. See operant. Compare functional operant.

DESPAIR

An emotional feeling of hopelessness. 2. One of Erikson's 8 stages of development. See integrity versus despair.

DETERIORATION EFFECT

After partcipating in psychotherapy this is the adverse or negative outcome from it.

DEUTAN COLOR BLINDNESS

Colour blindness where green is not seen properly or is confused with red.

DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLINGUISTICS

Branch of psycholinguistics looking at language acquired by children.

DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICOLOGY

The study of the effects of toxic poisoning on development of children.

DIABETES INSIPIDUS

Metabolic disorder showing excessive thirst and increased urination without the presence of sugar in the urine. See nephrogenic diabetes insipudus.

DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW SCHEDULE (DIS)

The structured interview used to assess a person's symptoms.

DIARY METHOD

Technique where data is compiled by daily observation.

DICHOTOMOUS THINKING

Thinking in terms of polar opposites as in the bestb and worst.

DIFFERENTIAL ABILITY SCALES (DAS)

A test of individual intelligence not based on any one theory that yields a broad index of intelligence.

DIFFERENTIAL REINFORCEMENT OF OTHER BEHAVIOR (DRO)

Used to decrease the rate of a targeted response. Also called ommission training.

The process of breaking food so it can be used by the body.
