Psychosurgery is the use of surgical intervention in the course and treatment of psychological and neurological disorders. The philosophy behind psychosurgery is to surgically intervene in the area of the brain believed to be the locus of disorder. Examples include temporal lobectomy and prefrontal lobotomy. These interventions are among the most controversial of all treatments in the field. Contemporary approaches have moved away from this treatment strategy.
