PYRAMIDAL TRACT

The pyramidal tract is the primary pathway used by motor neurons originating in the motor area of the cerebral cortex. Fibers of the neurons communicate with neurons supplying the peripheral muscles. Because of the contralateral nature of the left and right brain hemispheres and motor activity on opposite sides of the body, pyramidal tract fibers cross the pyramids of the medulla oblongata.
