DRIVE DISPLACEMENT

Activating another drive when the first one is thwarted such has having a chocolate instead of a cigarette. Also called consumatory response theory of reinforcement.

DRIVE DISPLACEMENT: "Joe used drive displacement by chewing gum when he wated to smoke."
