Saying good-bye to someone you love is never easy. When you care about a person, your love doesn’t end just because they are not there. People who touch your life remain in your heart forever. So how do you face each day without the person who meant so much to you? What can you do to fill up the spot where your loved one used to be?
Let Yourself Grieve the Loss
Don’t let friends and family determine how long your grieving period should be. Allow yourself plenty of time to mourn the loss of the person you loved. You will always remember the person you loved and the times you shared together, but you must convince yourself to get back into the groove after a reasonable length of time.
Talking is a Good Thing
Don’t be afraid to share memories and feelings with others. Sometimes people try to stifle their feelings, or avoid talking about their loved one. Talking is a healthy way to help yourself heal.
Get Together With Friends
Everyone has experienced some type of loss. Talk with others about how they dealt with their feelings and how they worked through the pain. Some people throw themselves into their work to keep themselves busy. Others develop new interests or hobbies. Make plans to meet friends for dinner, drinks, or whatever social setting you prefer. Find comfort in knowing they have probably been where you are now, and they survived.
Get Some Exercise
Starting a regular exercise program is a great way to elevate your mood and your fitness level. Exercise improves your mental and physical well-being, without the use of anti-depression medications or other medical intervention. Join a gym, take a Zumba or yoga class, or simply commit to a walk in the park a few days a week. You’ll not only benefit from the exercise, but you’ll also meet new people, and develop new habits.
Time is a Great Healer
When your loss is fresh, you may feel like you will never stop missing the person who is gone. That is partly true; you will always feel the sting of losing a loved one, but you will begin to feel better as time goes on. You may smile instead of crying when you think of special little things you did together. You’ll eventually be able to look at photographs without feeling an overwhelming sense of sadness and loss.
Get Back Into Life
You’ll know when it’s time to jump back into this wonderful thing we call life. Don’t feel guilty when you find yourself having fun and enjoying yourself. That’s the way life is supposed to be. Your experience will give you the tools to help someone else when life brings loss into their life. Take the time you need, but don’t give up on life. Life will never give up on you!
