When someone dies, the survivors are left to grieve and pick up the pieces of their lives. Friends are an important part of the grieving process. A friend can be a shoulder to cry on, an errand runner, a mentor, or a quiet listener. Survivors think about their loved one constantly, and love to hear others talk fondly of the person who passed away. Sending a thoughtful funeral card message is a small thing you can do to give comfort to someone who is grieving a loss. Your kind words can make a difference in the difficult days following the funeral. Here are some samples to help you write with sincerity and compassion.
Loss of Mother
I was so saddened to hear of your mother’s passing. I can remember playing at your house when we were kids, and eating her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Your mom was one of the sweetest women I have ever known, and I will never forget her kindness or the way she always welcomed me into your home. I’d love to get together to share memories when you feel up to it. You know I’m just a phone call away if you need me. I’m thinking of you, my friend.
Loss of Spouse
I am so sorry to hear about John’s accident. I know you must be devastated. He was a dear friend and such a positive role model. We had more than a business relationship. John taught me so much about life and about marriage. He talked about his love for you with warmth and candor. I remember him leaving early every Wednesday to buy your favorite flowers for your weekly date night. I hope those sweet memories of his unconditional love for you sustain you through these difficult days. Please call me if you need anything at all. I’ll be there.
Loss of Child
My heart is breaking for you. I can’t imagine the pain of losing your precious baby. I’m so glad I was able to meet her and hold her in my arms. I will never forget those beautiful eyes, or the way she smiled when I talked to her. She looked so much like you. I have some beautiful photographs of that day. I’ll bring them over when you feel like having company. Allyssa touched many hearts in her short time on earth. Please take care of yourself, and know that my sincere sympathy and warmest thoughts are with you.
A heartfelt expression of sympathy is appreciated and cherished. Write a note that is sincere and personal. Offer to be there for the survivor and follow-up your offer with a phone call or visit when the time is right.
