PRINCIPLE OF PROPORTIONALITY

A relatively simple judicial philosophy that states the punishment should fit the crime; Biblically, the "eye for an eye, tooth for tooth" principle.

PRINCIPLE OF PROPORTIONALITY: "The principle of proportionality states that hanging a man for stealing a loaf of bread when he is hungry is simply wrong."
