Generally regarded as a pejorative, it is a slang term referencing gays and lesbian.. In its more benign use, it describes anything that is out of the ordinary. Interestingly, it was adopted by members of the gay and lesbian community which they used with pride. However, there is a strong contingency of the LGBT community who still find it quite offensive.

QUEER: "We heard chants of "We're here. We're queer. Get used to it", coming from the gay pride parade."
