n. refers to a culture-bound syndrome observed mainly among healthy, Filipino males. The individual is often overheard screaming or moaning during sleep. Following this apparent experience of a terrifying nightmare- unexpected death follows. Also known as oriental nightmare-death syndrome.

BANGUNGUT: "A person suffering the culture-bound syndrome called bangungut would likely experience a nightmare and then die, for no apparent reason."
