BEAT GENERATION

n. the emergence of a group of talented and influential writers back in the 1950's. These writers included the likes of novelist Jack Kerouac and poets Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs, among others. More of a cultural phenomenon, it marked a new alternative lifestyle centered on literature, philosophy, and enlightenment as well as sex, drink, and drugs.

BEAT GENERATION: "The era of the Beat Generation was filled with much protest over the emptiness and purposelessness of modern society, thus, fueling much interest in a more enlightened Buddhist and American-Indian culture."
