Whether having an idea for a book, just starting a book or in the middle of a project, funds may dwindle. Children's book authors have a number of resources available for obtaining a grant. Some are competitive and are awarded based on a panel review and point systems. Others are available to authors desiring to cover a specific topic. The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is a wonderful website to start a search. The site features a long list of options that include the Boston Public Library that offers residency grants. Each source explains grant requirements, applications and instructions. Research the sources, and follow the stipulations and instructions to improve chances of being chosen for a grant.
The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
Becoming a member of the SCBWI makes them eligible for the Barbara Karlin Grant and the SCBWI Book Launch Award. Each offers a $2,000 monetary award. Hyperlinks provide detailed information for eligibility requirements. Locate and download the application for each entitlement. Pay close attention to the calendar for application deadlines.
The Boston Public Library
Visit the library's website and go to the page labeled Children's Writer in Residence Program. Locate and review the guidelines. Through this program, new writers are eligible to receive up to $20,000 along with an office, which they are allowed to use for nine months. Requirements include being a citizen of the United States and being willing to work at least 20 hours every week in the library office provided. Authors also cannot have more than three previously published books. Find, download and submit the application form, which must be submitted before May 15.
The American Institute of Physics
Click through to the Science Communications Awards page. The institution offers a $3,000 grant in order to promote science in the fields of broadcast, new media and print. Fill out the online entry form or download, fill out and mail the form. Acceptable entries include written books, multimedia presentations or completed web content. However, each entry must be geared toward youngsters under 16 years of age.
Lee & Low Publishing
The children's book publishing company sponsors the New Voices Award specifically to writers belonging to an ethnic group of color. However, the author cannot have a previously published book. Go to the New Voices Award page and review the guidelines. Submit a manuscript and application form to the address provided. The New Voices Award provides winners with a $1,000 grant. The publishing company additionally provides the award recipient with a publishing contract. Interested authors might also apply for the Honor Award Grant of $500.
PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship
A fellowship of $5,000 is awarded to the children's author who must be nominated by another author or editor. Anyone desiring to nominate an individual must go to the fellowship page and review the guidelines. Submissions must include the letter of nomination, copies of a manuscript and proof the nominated author's current earnings.
