First named by Sigmund Freud, the libido is an individuals psychic energy non-specific. It is an individuals general life energy. The libido was initially thought to be purely sexual energy however this understanding was broadened to include expressions of love, pleasure and self-preservation.

LIBIDO: "The libido is an individuals sexual drive or sexual force, otherwise classed as a general life energy which all human beings possess as postulated by Sigmund Freud."
