In contrast to the traditional concept of a career path, the protean career is more personally based, calling upon a worker's individual talents that can be marketed to different companies or even specialties. The days of a man joining a company at 21 and staying until retirement at 65 are no longer the overwhelmingly common template for career advancement. With a protean career, stretches of time spent with just one company may becoming shorter and shorter in duration.
