Anterior structures of the eye, such as the lens and cornea, fixate light upon the retina, that transposes photons into neural signals. These are then transmitted via the optic nerve and optic tract to nuclei inside the thalamus and brainstem. These convey the signals either to the visual regions of the cerebral cortex for conscious study or immediately to motor centers inside the brainstem and spinal cord to generate eye motions.
