PROBAND

Also called the index case, the proband is the individual in a family whose genetic disorder forms the center from which an investigation into the prevalence of the disorder in the rest of the family is started. Their pedigree aids the investigation.

PROBAND: "Manny was the proband in the investigation into the prevalence of downs syndrome in his family."
